Shubman Gill is in a tremendous form in One Day Internationals. Making a comeback to the Indian team in the ODI series against West Indies, Gill smacked 205 runs in three innings at an average of 102.50. The batter continued the purple patch against Zimbabwe as well.

Opening the innings in the first match, Gill played a fine knock of 82*. Though the second game didn’t go as per plan, the batter created history in the third One Day International. As India decided to bat first, the 22-year-old smashed his maiden international hundred.

A glance at Gill’s century against Zimbabwe

Batting at number three, the young rookie recorded a score of 130 runs off 97 balls. His knock was laced with 15 boundaries and one maximum at a strike rate of 134.02. It was an under-pressure knock by Gill as India lost their opening duo of KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan early in the match.

He stitched a 140-run partnership for the third wicket with Ishan Kishan, who registered a score of 50 runs. The exploits by the two batters steered India to a massive total of 289 at Harare Sports Club.

Chasing the total, Zimbabwe fell short of 13 runs, and India successfully won the three-match series by 3-0. Gill was aptly rewarded for his brilliant performance as he took home the Player of the Match and Player of the Series award.

Gill becomes the second-youngest player to hit an ODI hundred

Apart from the accolades, the young Indian batter also recorded his name in the history books. He now holds the record for the highest individual score by an Indian batter in One Day Internationals against Zimbabwe. The Punjab-born leapfrogged Sachin Tendulkar.

The former Indian skipper previously held the record with a knock of 127* that came way back in 1998 in Bulawayo. Also, the opening batter is the second-youngest cricketer to slam an ODI hundred against Zimbabwe. The first position is taken by Mohammed Kaif, who scored a century at the age of 21 years and 287 days.

We can now say that the future of Indian cricket in One Day International is in safe hands. With scores of 64, 43, 98*, 82*, 33, and 100 in his last six ODI outings, Gill has successfully established himself as the top contender for replacing Rohit Sharma or Shikhar Dhawan at the top in the future.
