India’s young captain, Shubman Gill, is on the verge of creating cricketing history, and not just any record. He has a real chance to break the world record of most runs in a Test series set by the great Sir Don Bradman back in 1930, something no batter has come close to in nearly 100 years.

Gill is in the form of his life in this Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with four hundreds, a career-best score of 269, and a 90.25 average. He is the highest run-scorer of the series so far and is all set to challenge a historic world record, which currently belongs to Don Bradman.

Shubman Gill 253-Run Away From World Record

As the fifth and final Test against England kicks off at The Oval on July 31, all eyes are on Indian captain Shubman Gill. The 25-year-old has been in phenomenal form this series, leading from the front with the bat.

So far, he has scored 721 runs in the first four Tests. Now, he needs 253 more to surpass Sir Don Bradman’s record of 974 runs in a single Test series, a mountain-sized achievement that could put his name alongside the biggest legends of the sport.

Most Runs Scored In A Test Series:

  • Don Bradman - 974 runs, 1930
  • Wally Hammond - 905 runs, 1928
  • Mark Taylor - 839 runs, 1989

Back in 1930, Bradman stunned the world by smashing 974 runs in just 5 Tests during the Ashes in England. No one has come close since. But now, Gill has the opportunity to rewrite the record books if he can put on another spectacular performance.

It won’t be easy, as 253 runs in one Test is a massive task. But if there’s one player who has shown the hunger and ability to do it, it’s Gill. In the second Test at Edgbaston, Gill scored a jaw-dropping 430 runs across two innings. That kind of batting masterclass proves that breaking Bradman’s record is not out of reach.

Gill Likely To Surpass Sunil Gavaskar

If Shubman Gill is somehow unable to reach Don Bradman’s record, he is likely to surpass Sunil Gavaskar to set the record for most runs scored in a Test series by an Indian. Gavaskar holds the baton with 774 runs, which he scored in 1970 against the West Indies. He had similar stats to Gill, four hundreds and 154.80 average. Gill now requires only 53 runs to surpass this record and earn a special place in the history of Indian cricket.
