Yet again Bangladesh has found itself in hot waters and this time in an awkwardly embarrassing situation. Durbar Rajshahi’s foreign cricketers are trapped in their Dhaka hotel after the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise repeatedly failed to pay their salaries.
Notably, players from Pakistan, Afghanistan, West Indies, and Zimbabwe have not received full wages or daily allowances for the past 11 days, with some unpaid entirely. Despite promises, the team’s owner and management have ignored calls for updates or flight arrangements to send them home.
Overseas Cricketers Abandoned In Dhaka As Management Disappears
Cricketers, Mohammad Haris, Aftab Alam, Mark Deyal, Miguel Cummins, and Ryan Burl are stranded in a Dhaka hotel after their BPL team, Durbar Rajshahi, failed to pay their salaries or arrange return flights. Despite repeated attempts, the team’s owner, Shafique Rahman, and management have gone silent, leaving the players trapped without updates or support.
Notably, in a recent development, Mohammad Haris is set to depart from Dhaka on Monday following intervention by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). According to sources, the PCB reached out to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to ensure a smooth resolution for his travel arrangements. However, status of the remaining players are still under the clouds.
The crisis has embarrassed Bangladesh’s cricket community, highlighting poor oversight by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Rajshahi faced financial troubles throughout the tournament, leading to protests. As per espn.in, local players initially boycotted training over unpaid wages, while overseas players briefly refused to play. Though the team stayed in playoff contention, they were eliminated Saturday.
BPL's Shameful Management Failure
Durbar Rajshahi's owner, Shafique Rahman, faced public humiliation earlier when a Chattogram hotel detained him over unpaid bills, with viral images showing security outside his room. The team later switched hotels in Dhaka due to further payment issues.
BCB official Nazmul Abedeen Fahim admitted the board failed to properly check the franchise’s financial stability before approving its entry. Bangladesh’s sports adviser, Asif Mahmud, warned Rahman of legal action if payments aren’t cleared immediately. A government committee will investigate how the franchise was approved, aiming to prevent future scandals from damaging the country’s cricket reputation.
