Pakistan have finally announced their Champions Trophy squad and to no one's surprise, they have retained their core players as the defending champions look to retain their crown next month. The team has a great mixture of youth and experience and that will be vital for their title defence which begins on February 19.

The team has many players to rely on for the tournament, but none bigger than their star player and former captain, Babar Azam. The world's number one ranked ODI batter will be a key figure in Pakistan's Champions Trophy run, however, it just feels something is off with Babar and he is not the same batter anymore.

Despite him still being one of the top 3 50-overs player in the world, there are 3 massive reasons which prompts us to say that Babar is destined to fail in the Champions Trophy 2025 and here's why.

3) Failures in the last two ICC tournaments

By his lofty standards, Babar Azam had failed in the last two ICC tournaments. In the 2023 50-overs World Cup, Pakistan crashed out of the group stage and Babar couldn't post a single match-winning score as he accumulated 320 runs in 9 matches, but nothing significant in terms of winning runs.

Similarly, in the T20 World Cup last year, Pakistan once again bowed out of the group stage and Babar only scored 122 runs in 4 matches at a strike rate of just 101. History suggests that he is once again destined to fail, judging by his recent track records in ICC competitions.

2) Babar has been on an inconsistent run

He had a miserable 2024 across formats as the batter had no match-winning performances. However, he performed exceedingly well in the series against South Africa, but inconsistency followed him in the West Indies series as he had string of low scores.

Prior to such a big ICC tournament, Babar is down in confidence because he is not getting enough runs on a consistent basis.

1) Teams have found his weakness

Over the years, Babar was consistent in his scoring patterns, but the teams have finally found his weakness. He tends to struggle with the incoming deliveries and it has become a pattern in his dismissals across formats.

Opposition bowlers tend to bowl the one which nips back in and Babar often find ways to get dismissed and expect a similar pattern to be followed during the Champions Trophy 2025 matches.
