Bangladesh Cricket is experiencing a difficult time, and their all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan seems to be facing endless problems. The veteran cricketer was initially included in the Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against South Africa. However, his expected participation in what was to be his farewell Test was marred by political unrest and subsequent protests in Bangladesh.

Earlier this week Shakib Al Hasan confirmed that he had reconsidered his decision to return to Bangladesh and cited the advice he received about the potential security risks.

In response to these security concerns, he decided not to return home and miss the crucial series. His absence from the series has roots in the significant political upheaval that unfolded in Bangladesh a few months ago.

Shakib Al Hasan Faces Threats Ahead Of SA Test

A massive student-led protest movement led to the resignation of the ruling government. Shakib, who had been publicly aligned with the political party, has faced backlash from many protesters, particularly the student groups who played a vital role in the former government’s downfall.

These groups have expressed discontent with Shakib’s political affiliations, which culminated in threats of protest if he chose to land in Dhaka for the Test series against South Africa.

Shakib Al Hasan's Fans Removed From Protest

Ahead of the opening Test, a group of Shakib’s supporters, gathered outside the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur to protest his absence. Around 40 to 50 fans displayed placards demanding Shakib’s participation.  According to the reports of, The Daily Star, these supporters were dispersed by five to ten unidentified men wielding batons. Security personnel on-site aided in clearing the protestors from the area.

Bangladesh’s preparations for the two-match series, which is also part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle, have been hampered by Shakib Al Hasan's absence. His vast experience and contributions as a all-rounder is irreplaceable, and his exclusion leaves a significant void in the team.

It is important to mention that, the first Test is scheduled to begin on Monday ( October 21) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, and the second Test will be played at Chattogram from October 29.
