After the gruelling Test series Vs New Zealand, India are set to face their toughest challenge as they travel to Australia for a 5-match Test series, starting on November 22. The tour will be a litmus test for the entire squad, as India aim to win their third successive series, Down Under.
In 2018-19 and 2020-21, India came out victorious, 2-1 on both the occasions as Australia faced humiliating defeats. However, things will be different this time around. India have an ageing squad, and to create further problems, skipper Rohit Sharma might not play the first Test due to personal reasons, and for that, India need a solid opener.
With Yashasvi Jaiswal already locked in as Rohit's partner, Team India needs a third opener to travel Down Under. The two prime contenders are Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhimanyu Easwaran. But who will be the backup opener?
Abhimanyu Easwaran: More technically solid, gritty defensive batter
Over the years, Easwaran has performed exceedingly well in the domestic circuit and has been a cornerstone for his domestic team. The talented batter is known for his technical excellence, showcasing impeccable tenacity, something which is required in Australian conditions.
In first-class cricket, Easwaran has an amazing record, scoring 7638 runs in 99 matches, at an average of 49.92, almost touching the 50 mark. He is known for playing long innings and it was evident in the Irani Cup when he took down the Mumbai attack with ease.
If India need someone to grind it out in the middle and play the Cheteshwar Pujara type of innings, Easwaran is the right choice.
Ruturaj Gaikwad: More flair, suits the aggressive style of play
A different type of player as compared to Easwaran. If India are looking for someone who can be slightly aggressive in Australian conditions, then Ruturaj Gaikwad should be the preferred choice. Another player with solid technique, Gaikwad has honed his skills in the domestic cricket, and while he may not possess the numbers of Easwaran, he certainly has the aggressive game, which the modern day requires.
In 34 first-class matches, Gaikwad has accumulated 2368 runs, at 43.05 with 6 centuries under his name. He can be an interesting choice if India decides to bring in someone who they want to attack right from ball one.
