Shakib Al Hasan might well step down as Bangladesh captain, just days prior to the launch of their World Cup 2023 campaign in India. The star all-rounder was handed over the leadership role earlier this year, and recently led his side at the 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.

As per reports, the 36-year-old wants to step down as captain because he does not intend to lead an injury-ravaged Bangladesh side at the forthcoming marquee event.

Shakib Al Hasan clarifies intentions with BCB: Report

According to The Daily Star, Shakib Al Hasan has informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) about his intentions of discontinuing as team captain. The cricketer met BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon alongside Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and made his intentions known to the top official.

The sources claimed that Shakib does not want to lead an unfit team at the 2023 World Cup in India.

It is worth noting that senior Bangladesh batsman Tamim Iqbal has been named in Bangladesh’s 15-player tournament squad, even though he is yet to fully recover from his back injury. Furthermore, both Shakib and Tamim may not be on good terms due to their possible underlying conflict within the team.

Bangladesh is currently engaged in a three-match home ODI series against the visiting New Zealanders in Dhaka. The series marks their final set of fixtures prior to the upcoming cricketing carnival.

Thereafter, they will commence their World Cup 2023 campaign in India with a match against continental rivals Afghanistan.

Their much-awaited bout will be played on October 7, and will be hosted by the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala.
