Pakistan’s premium pace bowler, Shaheen Afridi, suffered a knee injury during the Big Bash League clash between the Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers on Saturday. The Heat fast bowler landed heavily on his knee during his bowling spell, and he complained of pain as he was taken off the field, looking somewhat discomforted.
There were serious doubts regarding his participation in the remainder of the BBL competition, and according to the latest reports by Pakistani journalist Saleem Khaliq, the injury appears to be serious, with fears that he might miss the remaining BBL matches for the Heat.
This has also put his T20 World Cup participation in jeopardy, especially with the marquee event less than two months away. He is Pakistan's key player in the T20I format, and this is the same injury that hampered his World Cup campaign in 2022.
Old injury resurfaces again for Shaheen ahead of T20 World Cup
Before the Asia Cup 2022 event in the UAE, Shaheen was at the peak of his powers when the left-arm seamer suffered a knee injury, as he missed the Asian event and the T20I series against England. However, he was back for the T20 World Cup that year, but he looked a pale shadow of his former self.
Pakistan reached the finals against England, and at the crucial juncture, Shaheen’s injury relapsed as he walked back to the dugout, as the Men in Green suffered a heartbreaking defeat.
The same injury has reoccurred for Shaheen just months before the T20 World Cup and considering the seriouness of the injury, he might miss the ongoing BBL.
How Shaheen has fared in the BBL 2025-26
A lot was expected of Shaheen Afridi as the Brisbane Heat acquired his services for the BBL season; however, things turned from bad to worse with each passing game.
In the opening match against Melbourne Renegades, Shaheen conceded 43 runs without getting a single wicket as the pacer had a nightmarish debut. In the following game against Scorchers, he managed to scalp a solitary wicket, but went for 49 runs.
In the third match against the Sydney Thunder, the seamer had an improved showing, conceding 35 runs and taking a single wicket. However, on Saturday against the Strikers, Shaheen was taken to the cleaners by the opposition batters as he went for 26 runs in three overs and had to walk back to the dugout due to a knee injury.
