The merry-go-round continues in Pakistan cricket as Mohammad Rizwan, the ODI captain of the side, is set to face PCB’s wrath, and the batter could be removed from the ODI captaincy, with PCB looking at the future. The Rizwan-led Pakistan team crashed out of the Champions Trophy in the group stage, and with the World Cup 2027 in sight, changes are expected.

The number one contender for the captaincy race is Shaheen Afridi, and he could potentially be the new ODI leader of the side. According to reports by Ejaz Wasim Bakri of BBN Sports, Shaheen is likely to replace Rizwan, who could be sacked from his position.

Rizwan was made the ODI captain after Babar Azam relinquished the position, and since then, the middle order batter has struggled as a leader, and the Champions Trophy at home was the final nail in the coffin as Pakistan were eliminated in the group stage after losing to India.

Shaheen's track record as captain

Shaheen was made the permanent T20I captain after Babar was removed from the post before the T20 World Cup 2024. However, after just one series away from home, the pacer was sacked from the position, with Babar replacing him.

Since then, Shaheen is elusive of captaincy; however, his track record as captain in PSL is astonishing. The pacer was made the captain of Lahore Qalandars, and he has led them to three PSL titles. He captured the trophy in 2022, 2023 season, and after a drop in 2024, Shaheen once again led Qalandars to another PSL trophy in 2025.

Will Rizwan be included in the ODI squad in future?

According to reports in Pakistani media, Rizwan is a key batter in the Pakistan side, and even if his captaincy is taken away, the middle-order batter will play as a pure batter and his place won’t be in danger due to the leadership role taken away.
