In a major development, Cricket South Africa has announced that each team will be allowed to sign a player outside of the auction for the maiden season of the SA20 league which is termed as a wildcard pick.

The signing can be done before 30th December and could be a South African or overseas player. Moreover, it isn't mandatory for any side to pick a player from the auction pool which means a non-registered player could be drafted in as well.

No upper limit has been set but the minimum base price is pegged at R175,000 which will increase squad strength from 17 to 18. Moreover, the salary of the player signed will be additional and won't count towards side's remaining purse.

Former Proteas skipper and league's commissioner Graeme Smith stated,

“The wild card offers our teams an opportunity to add another world-class player to their squad,

“The cricket community showed a lot of interest in our League for the auction, I have no doubt we will be seeing six brilliant cricketers joining the SA20.”

Further, it was mentioned that each team will be allowed to field a maximum of four international players from eight available in total. The inaugural season will begin on 10th January with six teams, all owned by different IPL franchises.
