Suryakumar Yadav, while being India's No. 1 T20I batter, has now taken on the significant responsibility of leading the T20I side.

As India gear up for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka starting on 27 July, Surya steps into the role previously held by Rohit Sharma.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is eyeing Surya as the captain for the T20 World Cup 2026, providing him with an opportunity to showcase his leadership skills.

At 33, Suryakumar is poised to make a mark not only as a captain but also as a top-order batter. He is on the brink of breaking Rohit Sharma's record against Sri Lanka in T20Is.

Surya needs just 158 more runs to surpass Rohit Sharma and become India's highest run-scorer against Sri Lanka in the shortest format.

Currently, Suryakumar has accumulated 254 runs from five innings at an impressive average of 63.50, including one century and two fifties. Rohit, who recently retired from T20Is, has 411 runs from 17 innings at an average of 24.17, including one century and one fifty.

While Suryakumar is heading on to a new chapter of his life, it will be interesting to see the newly-appointed captain proving his mettle in the shortest format of the game.
