India are looking for a comeback as the hosts have put 231/3 on the board after stumps on day 3. After falling for just 46 runs in the first innings, New Zealand rode on Rachin Ravindra's century and took a 356-run lead in their first innings.
In the second innings, India showed a positive intent and scored runs aggressively. In the process, the hosts have etched their name in the history books and scripted a milestone never achieved before in the history of Test cricket.
India Become First Team To Smash 100 Sixes In Test Cricket
Notably, India became the first team in Test history to smash 100 sixes in a calendar year across formats. So far, in the ongoing match, India have hit five sixes, and with that, they now have 102 sixes this year. Notably, England is second on the list when they smashed 89 sixes in 2022 and held that record for nearly two years.
It is worth noting that India held the record before England when they smashed 87 sixes in 2021 calendar year.
Most sixes by a team in a calendar year in Test cricket:
1 - India: 102 sixes in 2024*
2 - England: 89 sixes in 2022
3 - India: 87 sixes in 2021
4 - New Zealand: 81 sixes in 2014
5 - New Zealand: 71 sixes in 2013
It is worth noting that Yashasvi Jaiswal has smashed 29 sixes, the most by an Indian this year. Shubman Gill follows him on the list with 16 sixes. While skipper Rohit Sharma is the third on the list with 11 sixes.
India still have plenty of Test matches left in 2024 and would look to take their six hitting tally to new heights.
