Indian captain Rohit Sharma has taken a sly dig at South African players for prioritizing SA20 2024 over their upcoming Test tour of New Zealand.

The South African cricket team will be travelling to New Zealand in February for a two-match Test series. As it turns out, the schedule also coincides with the concluding stages of CSA’s SA20 2024 season.

In order to avoid scheduling conflicts, Cricket South Africa (CSA) named an inexperienced squad for their New Zealand tour, even though the Test series constitutes a part of the ongoing 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Rohit Sharma signifies importance of Test cricket

Indian captain Rohit Sharma, currently in South Africa for a two-match Test series against the hosts, has signified the importance of Test cricket. A day prior to India’s series-deciding Test match, the legendary opener said that it is the responsibility of all players to protect the game’s oldest format by keeping it healthy and entertaining.

While speaking with the reporters during the pre-match press conference, he said: “Test Cricket is something we have to protect and it is responsibility of every nation to keep it nice, healthy and entertaining.”

Rohit Sharma’s comments came after Cricket South Africa dropped an inexperienced squad for their two-match Test tour of New Zealand, in order to preserve their senior players for the SA20 2024 season.

Regardless, under Sharma’s leadership, Team India will go up against South Africa for their series-deciding second Test match at Cape Town’s Newlands Cricket Ground between January 3 and January 7. The visitors lost the first Test by an innings and 32 runs at Centurion after their famed batting line-up was folded up for 245 and 131 inside the first three days.
