In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it clear to both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma that they must participate in domestic cricket to be picked for the national ODI side. Rohit and Kohli recently featured in a three-match ODI series against Australia, which India lost by 2-1. While Rohit looked in sublime touch, Kohli bounced back with a valiant fifty after registering consecutive ducks in the first two matches.

Rohit ready to play Vijay Hazare Trophy; no clarity on Virat Kohli yet

According to an exclusive report by the Indian Express (Express Sports), the BCCI has communicated its stance to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, asking both of them to play domestic cricket in order to stay match-fit.

“The board and team management have conveyed to both of them that they will have to play domestic cricket if they want to play for India. As they both have retired from two formats, they have to play domestic cricket to be match-fit,” BCCI sources were quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

While Rohit Sharma has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) that he will play the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy and could also participate in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, Virat Kohli's availability for the domestic matches remains to be confirmed.

After a high-profile series against South Africa, India will cross swords with New Zealand in three ODIs on home soil. Interestingly, there's a solitary domestic one-day affair in between these two series.

As the report states, we might see Rohit Sharma play that game for Mumbai on December 24. Currently, the former Indian captain is fine-tuning his white-ball game through intense training sessions at the Sharad Pawar Indoor Academy in Mumbai.

Although Rohit's critics doubt whether he can keep himself fit and fine for the 2027 World Cup, the Hitman seems determined to play the marquee tournament.
