According to the emerging reports, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are set to be back in India's ODI squad for the upcoming series against Australia. India's leading news agency PTI has even claimed that the Men in Blue will have Rohit as their captain, while the experienced duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill are likely to be rested due to workload management.
Samson as 2nd wicketkeeper, Reddy to replace Pandya
The BCCI selection committee is likely to pick the Indian squad on Saturday. The report states that while the ODI series will mark the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma into international cricket, all-rounder Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant are likely to miss the ODI series due to injury. Nitish Kumar Reddy seems to be the frontrunner to replace Pandya in the Indian ODI squad for the Australia series.
On the other hand, Sanju Samson, who played a couple of valuable knocks for India in the Asia Cup, will likely get the nod ahead of Dhruv Jurel for the second wicketkeeper's slot, with KL Rahul playing as India's first-choice keeper-batter in ODIs. In 16 ODIs, Samson has amassed 510 runs at an average of 56.7 and a strike rate of 99.6.
Gill, Bumrah to be rested; Kohli, Rohit set to be back
The PTI report states that the BCCI selectors have no valid reason to look beyond Rohit Sharma as the Indian ODI captain at the moment. So, the veteran opener will make his ODI comeback with Virat Kohli, India's established number three batter in the format.
On the contrary, ace batter Shubman Gill will likely be rested to manage his workload, having featured in the England Tests, Asia Cup and the home series against the West Indies. Jasprit Bumrah might also join Gill, considering he has been active in international cricket since the England tour. If Gill is rested, the selectors will pick either Abhishek Sharma or Yashasvi Jaiswal as Rohit Sharma's opening partner for the ODI series.
