Indian captain Rohit Sharma led his team to an emphatic four-wicket win over New Zealand in the final to lift the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The legendary Indian opener also led the ‘Men in Blue’ to a historic unbeaten campaign at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies last year.
As it turns out, Sharma has now unintentionally found himself in a political crossfire between BJP and Congress. Responding to the ‘fat-shaming’ remarks of Congress member Shama Mohamed last month, BJP MP Sambit Patra used the success of Team India captain to his advantage against opposition leader Rahul Gandhi at a recent Lok Sabha session.
BJP responds to Shama Mohamed’s remark on Rohit Sharma
During the course of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in the UAE, India’s Congress party leader Shama Mohamed posted a distasteful remark about Indian captain and legendary opening batter Rohit Sharma regarding ‘fitness’. Calling Sharma “too fat for a sportsperson”, Shama’s remark was widely criticised by the nation’s cricketing fraternity as well as by the political bigwigs of the ruling BJP government.
Responding to Shama Mohamed’s remarks in a recent viral video trending on Instagram, BJP MP Sambit Patra said that it is Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who is ‘unfit to lead’, and not Rohit Sharma. He said:
“Congress party says Rohit Sharma is unfit. But Rohit is not unfit, Rahul Gandhi is unfit.”
Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, Team India has clinched two successive ICC titles within the space of just nine months. In the recently-concluded 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in the UAE, the Indian team topped the Group A points table by securing easy wins over Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand, before walloping Australia in a hard-fought semifinal.
Rohit Sharma and co. also crashed New Zealand’s ambitions in the final to lift its third ICC Champions Trophy title, and its first since lifting the 2013 silverware in England.
