According to emerging reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to come under the purview of the national sports bill. Interestingly, this bill contains a provision regarding the extension of the age limit of sports administrators.
National Sports Bill Could Extend Binny's Stint
It's worth mentioning that former fast bowler and a member of India's 1983 World Cup-winning team, Roger Binny, replaced ex-captain Sourav Ganguly as the BCCI president in 2022.
However, the legendary cricketer recently celebrated his 70th birthday, and according to the BCCI rulebook, an office-bearer is disqualified from holding the post once they breach the age limit.
Therefore, it was assumed that Rajiv Shukla would replace him as the interim president of the BCCI. However, according to a PTI report, the BCCI might come under the National Sports Bill, which could allow Binny to extend his tenure.
“Like all National federations, the BCCI will have to comply with the law of the land once this bill becomes an act,” a source was quoted as saying by PTI.
The bill proposes an extension of the upper age limit, allowing the office-bearers aged between 70 and 75 to contest elections. Therefore, Roger Binny could serve as the BCCI president for a few more years despite being 70 years old.
The national sports bill aims to ensure transparency and good governance in the National Sports Federations (NSFs), a group to which the BCCI will belong if the bill is passed in parliament. Apart from conducting timely elections, the sporting bodies will have to ensure athlete welfare and take administrative accountability once the bill gets formally transformed into a law.
