Ricky Ponting calls for Tim David’s selection for the T20 World Cup 2022

Ricky Ponting believes that Tim David can be a boon to the Australian side during their T20 World Cup title defence.

In recent years, David had made huge strides in the T20 format. After two successful seasons in the BBL, the 25-year-old got an opportunity with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022.

In eight innings, David slammed 186 runs at a strike rate of 216.28 and made his case stronger for national selection.

Ponting compared David to his late friend Andrew Symonds, due to the former’s match-winning and ball-striking abilities.

The 47-year-old thinks none of the players in the current Australian middle-order possess a resume as impressive as David's in the last two years.

"If I was a selector, I would love to have someone like that in my team," Ponting said. "If he's playing or not, just to have that sort of striking power ability around, he's an out and out match-winner,” said Ponting.

"He's the sort of player that could actually win you a World Cup.”

Ponting excited to work with David in BBL 12

Ponting, who was recently appointed as Head of Strategy and Development at Hobart Hurricanes is keen to use David more effectively in BBL 12.

The former Aussie captain revealed that the team management is trying to maximize the potential of the youngster in the upcoming season.

In BBL 11, David scored 218 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 163.91. In the 2022 edition of the T20 Blast, he piled up 405 runs in 17 innings at 174.56.

In February this year, David extended his contract with the Hurricanes for another two years

"I think there's a chance for him to probably take on a bit more responsibility in the batting line-up with the Hurricanes this season as well because of his consistency and his match-winning ability,” said Ponting.
