Harmanpreet Kaur thinks featuring in Commonwealth Games will be great for the Indian team

Harmanpreet Kaur is delighted that the Indian women’s team is getting an opportunity to feature in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022. 

It will be the first occasion after 1998, that Cricket is returning to the Games. However, the tournament will only witness the participation of the women's team. 

Eight teams are drawn into two different groups. India is placed along with Australia, Pakistan, and Barbados in Group B

Ahead of their departure, Kaur reckoned that women’s cricket in a big event like CWG can be a game-changer in the long run. 


“Whenever you go to a big event, it is important for you to perform well. To show the capability you have. So definitely if we get to play in such tournaments, it's good for women's cricket. Yes, having women's cricket in a multi-nation event can prove to be a game changer," said Harmanpreet during a virtual press conference.

The Indian skipper revealed that she has grown old watching India represent different sports in the multi-nation events. Kaur added that the Indian team will surely benefit from participating in these key events. 

The 33-year-old added that the team wants to celebrate every medal that India wins in the CWG 2022. 


“Definitely, this tournament is very important for us and this time we are playing for a medal because if I talk about myself, we have grown watching these types of tournaments and this time, we are glad that we are getting an opportunity to be part of this big event and I think, in future if we keep getting these opportunities, it will be great for us."


The strong 322-member contingent of the Indian team will comprise of 215 athletes - 108 men and 107 women. 

In the 2018 edition of CWG, India finished third in the tally with 66 medals to their name. 

The Kaur-led side will lock horns with Australia on Friday (July 29) at Birmingham. The competition will be based on the T20 format, and all the matches will hold an international status.
