County Championship 2022 | Division Two Round-up, July 23

The Division Two match between hosts Leicestershire and Glamorgan came to a conclusion on Saturday, July 23. As another County Championship 2022 week goes by, here is a look at how the final day of action panned out at Leicester.

Leicestershire vs Glamorgan

A rampant Glamorgan unit trumped Leicestershire in a final hour thriller at Leicester’s Grace Road.

To start off, the visitors faced just 31 overs on the decisive day to chart an additional 232 runs to their overnight score of 563-5. Captain David Lloyd called for a declaration when his side reached an astounding score of 795-5.

Sam Northeast continued where he left off on Day 3, as he belted the Leicestershire bowlers on his way to a remarkable quadruple ton. He remained unbeaten at 410 off just 450 balls, striking 45 boundaries and three maximums in the process. His partner, wicketkeeper-batsman Chris Cooke, himself clubbed a rapid 191* as Glamorgan maintained an overall innings run-rate of 4.96.

The hosts, left to survive the remaining 65 overs of the day, got bowled out for just 183 with few minutes to spare. Michael Hogan claimed a four-fer to extend his match haul to seven wickets.

Notably, Leicestershire’s first innings total of 584 in this match now marks the highest total for a team to lose by an innings in First-Class cricket.

Sam Northeast himself plundered several batting records through his match-winning innings. His unbeaten 410 now marks the highest individual First-Class score of the 21st century, highest First-Class score since 1995 and the ninth highest overall in the format.
