In the latest development, Team India has received a massive boost as Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the team has joined the squad ahead of the 1st Test in Headingley, Leeds. Gambhir's mother suffered from a cardiac arrest and as a result, he flew back to India.
His mother, Seema was taken to the hospital as the veteran cricketer rushed back to India, hours prior to the start of India vs India A intra-squad match. However, with the big series coming up against England, the former cricketer took a strong decision to come back to England and join the team ahead of the all-important series and the start of India's WTC cycle.
He left for the UK on June 16 (Monday) and arrived in the country, the next day. On the morning of June 18, he joined the squad as they prepare for the tough test against the hosts, England. In a tweet posted a by Times Now correspondent, Gambhir could be seen having a chat with his support staff member.
How Gambhir's arrival will benefit India?
Gautam Gambhir is a strong personality and is known for making tough decisions. The former India batter is known to prioritise national duty over anything else and his presence in the dressing room will hold the key for India's chances in the 5-match series.
The upcoming matches will mark the start of India's new chapter in Test cricket. With no Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, a young batter in Shubman Gill was appointed as the team captain. Hence, with not a lot of experience in the team, the visitors need Gambhir's tactical knowledge and his brilliance off the field to guide the young side.
The team has Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah as two experience players but the rest of the squad needs guidance off the field and Gambhir is the perfect man to give them a pep talk.
