In a massive setback for England, Reece Topley has been sidelined with an ankle injury that he sustained during the practice session before the Pakistan warm-up game. Pacer Richard Gleeson or Tymal Mills are in contention to be his replacement, which could be announced in the meantime.

28-year-old dealt with a major blow when his ankle rolled over while fielding on the boundary line that could possibly rule him out for forthcoming months. Already having a long history of injury, Topley has had as many as four stress fractures proving too costly for him.

Previously, he was considered doubtful for the mega-event but the scans now confirm his unavailability for the entirety of the tournament.

His last appearance in the T20 World Cup was in the year 2016 when he featured in two matches. With 17 wickets this summer, Topley was in superb form demonstrating his class.

England, meanwhile, are stuffed up with two left-armers in their ranks with Sam Curran and David Willey already in the squad while Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood are holding the pace bowling department together.

Topley is not the first person to miss out, it was Jofra Archer and then David Bairstow who are other miss-outs from this edition laid-low by injuries.

England will be playing their first game of the World Cup against Afghanistan on 22nd October.
