Pakistan’s Champions Trophy campaign received a major setback with the unfortunate injury of opener Fakhar Zaman, ruling him out for the remainder of the tournament. The left-handed batter suffered an oblique strain while fielding against New Zealand in Pakistan’s opening fixture.

The ICC has, however, approved Imam-ul-Haq as his replacement for the remainder of the tournament.  Now, the responsibility falls on Imam-ul-Haq, who has not played international cricket since 2023 but carries a formidable record as an ODI opener. Notably, in a recent development, the batter teased his form with a stellar knock in a PTG league match.

Imam teases form after being named replacement

Imam justified his Champions Trophy selection with a sensational knock in a domestic fixture, playing a pivotal role for PTV against OGDCL. Coming in with his team in a tricky position, Imam displayed his trademark composure and technique, scoring a magnificent 158 off 218 balls.

Haq's innings, laced with 18 boundaries, was a masterclass in controlled aggression, anchoring the innings when wickets were tumbling at the other end. Haq's innings proved to be the backbone of PTV’s fightback, especially after the team lost early wickets.

Imam hits the sweet spot

Imam’s ability to hold the innings together and accelerate when required showcased his maturity and form, which will be crucial for Pakistan as they look to bounce back in the Champions Trophy after a loss against New Zealand.

Haq's return to form has come at a perfect time, giving the national team management confidence ahead of the crucial clash against India on February 23. Imam-ul-Haq’s career stats further validate his credentials.

Imam's stellar ODI career

In ODIs, Imam has amassed 3,138 runs in 72 matches at an impressive average of 48.27, including nine centuries and 20 fifties. His ability to build partnerships and play long innings makes him an ideal fit at the top of the order.

With Pakistan already on the back foot after their defeat to New Zealand, Imam’s inclusion brings hope that his consistency and temperament can help revive their title defence in the tournament in the upcoming do-or-die match against India.
