In other news, Cricket Australia has also unveiled Australia’s squad for the first Ashes Test.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Wednesday, November 5.
Rishabh Pant returns as India name squad for SA Tests
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled the entire 15-player India squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa at home. Senior wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will be making his return to the national team after missing the West Indies series last month owing to his foot injury. Shubman Gill will continue to lead Team India, and he will be accompanied by fellow star attractions like opening batters KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, all-rounders Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, and fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj among others.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to not play vs SA A, Tilak to lead
The BCCI also unveiled the entire India A squad for the upcoming unofficial ODI series against South Africa A. Tilak Varma was appointed as team captain, while CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was named as his deputy. Fellow Indian players with international experience like Riyan Parag, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, active opener Abhishek Sharma and pacemen like Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana were also selected in the team. As rightfully reported earlier in the day, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will not be featuring in the series.
Mitchell Santner and Jacob Duffy share huge record with fighting stand vs WI
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner and number 11 Jacob Duffy crafted an electrifying 50-run partnership from just 20 balls for the tenth wicket against West Indies in the first T20I match in Auckland. Their partnership marked the highest tenth-wicket stand in T20I history among Test playing nations, and the fourth highest overall as New Zealand reached 157-9 despite slipping to 107-9 at one stage. However, the hosts still ended up falling seven runs short of their target to concede an early lead to the West Indies team in the series.
Labuschagne returns, Steve Smith to lead AUS Ashes squad
Cricket Australia (CA) named Australia’s 15-player squad for the first Test of the five-match Ashes series against England starting later this month. Steve Smith is set to lead the Australian team in place of a recovering Pat Cummins. Marnus Labuschagne was also called back into the squad following his prolific form in domestic cricket off late. Young opener Sam Konstas has been dropped from the team in the wake of his lean patch with the bat. Uncapped Jake Weatherald, aged 31, is in line to make his international debut as he was roped in by the selectors for the blockbuster series.
