Ravindra Jadeja wants RR captaincy [Source: AFP]
A major trade in the Indian Premier League (IPL) could soon become official, one that might be the biggest player swap in the tournament’s history. Reports suggest that Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson may be leaving the team after 12 years to join Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In return, Ravindra Jadeja and possibly another CSK player are expected to move to the Royals.
Former CSK captain puts special demand
What’s making headlines is Jadeja’s special demand. According to Cricketnext report, the experienced all-rounder has asked the Rajasthan Royals management to make him the captain if the trade goes through. Jadeja, who is 37, wants to spend the final years of his IPL career with more responsibility and leadership.
The Royals, if they lose Samson, will also lose their current captain. They do have young options such as Riyan Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Dhruv Jurel. Still, the team might prefer an experienced leader like Jadeja to maintain stability in the dressing room. Notably, Parag did lead the side in a few matches last season when Samson was injured, but RR seems interested in having a new, senior face at the top.
On the other hand, Sanju Samson will not be taking over the captaincy of CSK right away. The Chennai team still looks to MS Dhoni as their leader, and while Samson is seen as a possible future successor, CSK has no plans to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad, who captained the team last season before getting injured.
Jadeja has been a crucial part of the CSK family since 2012, playing 186 matches for the franchise, second only to Dhoni. Over the years, he became one of the fan favorites and an important figure in the team’s success.
It is worth noting that Jadeja briefly captained CSK in 2022, leading them in eight matches. However, the team managed to win only two games under his leadership, and he stepped down midway through the season.
