Former Indian off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin has been named Padma Shri award winner. He will be honoured with India’s fourth-highest civilian award to recognise his contribution to the field of cricket.

Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the most successful bowlers to serve Indian cricket in Test format. In 106 Tests, he scalped 537 wickets to become India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format, only second to legend Anil Kumble.

Last month, he announced his retirement from international cricket in the middle of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, bidding farewell to what has been a legendary career.

In the latest achievement, Ravichandran Ashwin has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri. He joins the elite league of cricket legends including Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and MS Dhoni. Among India's top civilian honours, the Padma Shri recognises the exceptional contributions by Ashwin towards Indian cricket.

He has recently retired from international cricket, following the Brisbane Test in 2024 and has concluded a sparkling career where he was the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Test history with 537 wickets in 106 matches. The all-rounder, with 3503 Test runs to his name, has six centuries as well.

Even though he has announced his international retirement, Ashwin is active in the IPL and rejoins Chennai Super Kings for the 2025 season.

Ashwin sparks outrage with a comment on Hindi language

Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has caused controversy after stating, "Hindi is an official language, not the national language." Speaking at a graduation ceremony in Chennai, Ashwin’s comment followed an interaction with the audience, where cheers erupted for English and Tamil but barely any for Hindi.

His comment referred to a sensitive topic, particularly in Tamil Nadu, which had long been known to be against Hindi imposition. The comment has drawn mixed reactions, with some praising his courage to address the topic and others criticising him for fuelling regional sentiments.
