Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is currently leading the Dindigul Dragons in the ongoing TNPL 2023 season. In his first match of the tournament this year, the cricketer was involved in a rare incident, where two reviews were taken off the same delivery.

The moment went viral across social media, and generated much curiosity and interest among fans across the world. Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra feels that the bizarre incident in question was actually a blessing in disguise for TNPL, as it put the Tamil Nadu-based professional T20 league on the world map.

Chopra says Ashwin’s small matter took TNPL to world map

When Ba11sy Trichy reached 69-6 from 12.5 overs, Dindigul Dragons captain Ravi Ashwin seemingly dismissed batsman R Rajkumar caught-behind. On-field umpire responded to Ashwin’s call, only for Rajkumar to immediately call for a review.

Third umpire revoked the decision upon realising the ball may have missed the bat, thus prompting the on-field official to reverse his call. Interestingly, an agitated Ashwin then decided to use up his own review off the same delivery. Unfortunately for the Indian legend, his double review did not make any difference as third umpire’s not out call was upheld following further replays.

Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra believes Ashwin’s double review call has taken TNPL to the world map. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former opening batter said:

“Ashwin anna's small matter has brought TNPL to the world map. He was bowling very well, had picked up a wicket, and there was an appeal for another wicket where the umpire gave it out.”

Chopra also stated that TNPL officials will look back at the incident and realise that such a counter-review option was not available. He also questioned Ashwin’s decision, and claimed cricketers cannot do it because a review can be taken only within the 15 seconds.

“Ashwin said he wanted to review it again. It is beyond my understanding. I feel when the TNPL officials look back, they will say that this option was not available.”

“You can't do it. There are multiple reasons for that - you need to take the review within 15 seconds. The review was taken and the third umpire told, with all due diligence, what his thinking was. Now you are reviewing the third umpire's thinking and asking him only to be the judge.”

Meanwhile, Ashwin’s Dragons ultimately prevailed in the game, as his side romped through their 120-run task with ease, and registered their opening points of the TNPL 2023 season.
