Afghanistan have played just seven Tests [X.com]
Ever since making their foray into Test cricket, Afghanistan have managed to play just seven, and one since April 2021.
Afghanistan have focused more on limited-overs cricket, with multiple T20 World Cups and Cricket World Cups scheduled between 2021 and 2023, but have managed to find space for Tests as well.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced that the national side will play their first-ever Test against Sri Lanka during their upcoming tour of the Emerald Island, starting February 2, which also consists of three ODIs and as many T20Is.
From Sri Lanka, Afghanistan will travel to UAE for their home series against Ireland, commencing February 28, which will start with a one-off Test, and move into a white-ball leg, featuring three ODIs and three T20I.
In a statement, ACB chief Mirwais Ashraf confirmed that the Sri Lankan tour was going to have a Test and three T20Is and that ODIs had been added later.
Addition of these three ODIs is a significant move - Mirwais Ashraf
"The addition of these three ODIs is a significant move to ensure a complete and comprehensive tour which not only provides good exposure to Afghanistan Cricket but will also foster stronger relations between the two nations. Playing Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka is always tricky but is a challenge that Afghan Atalan can easily embrace."
Afghanistan, led by Ibrahim Zadran, are currently touring India for its first-ever T20I against the hosts, which will consist of three matches and will commence from January 11 at Mohali.
The first Test against Sri Lanka will be played at SCC in Colombo, followed by ODIs at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, with the T20Is being held at Dambulla. The one-off Test against Ireland will take place in Abu Dhabi, with Sharjah then hosting all ODIs and T20Is.
