Rain Saves South Africa From Embarrassment As They Qualify For ODI World Cup 2023

The news of a washed-out ODI match between Ireland and Bangladesh relieved the Protea supporters as South Africa surpassed Ireland in the ICC Men's Super League Rankings, automatically qualifying for the upcoming World Cup edition.

The World Cup is scheduled to take place in India later this year. As history suggests, the weather has never been on South Africa's side. Who can forget their infamous exit from the 2003 World Cup edition, where they were forced to split points with Sri Lanka under the new Duckworth-Lewis rule.

However, this time around, the rain god showed their mercy and bailed the Proteas out of an embarrassing world cup qualifier fixture. In the 3-match ODI series between Bangladesh and Ireland, the Tigers had to win at least one game to effect a direct world cup qualification for South Africa.

However, Ireland faced the daunting challenge of registering a 3-0 clean sweep against a resurgent Bangladesh side to make it to the eighth spot still up for grabs in the ICC Super League table.

But the rain intervention in the first ODI denied Ireland a direct qualification in the upcoming world cup edition. Ultimately, it was all too easy for South Africa as they comfortably sailed past Ireland to claim the eighth spot in the points table ahead of them.

Despite their astounding series win against the Dutch at home earlier this year, the eighth spot was still wide open for Ireland, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Netherlands to capitalise on.

But with the conclusion that the rain-affected 1st ODI, Proteas have confirmed their spot in the upcoming world cup tournament. On the flip side, Ireland must now partake in ICC Men's Qualifier scheduled to kick off in Zimbabwe between 18th June to 9th July.
