Quinton de Kock made his final ODI appearance last month at the 2023 World Cup in India. The dashing wicketkeeper-batsman, who made his exit from Tests back in December 2021 itself, had announced his ODI retirement months in advance prior to the cricketing carnival.

As it turned out, Quinton de Kock had intended to retire from all international formats following the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup, until he was persuaded by South Africa’s white-ball head coach Rob Walter to keep playing T20I cricket at least until next year’s T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies.

Quinton de Kock to continue T20Is at the behest of coach

South African batting stalwart Quinton de Kock made his exit from ODI cricket following his side’s demoralizing defeat at the hands of Australia at the 2023 World Cup semifinal. While the cricketer had preemptively set his retirement date, recent reports indicate that the dashing wicketkeeper-batsman was also aiming to make his exit from T20Is.

However, South Africa’s white-ball head coach Rob Walter persuaded the 31-year-old to keep trailing T20 matches. One can assume that Walter convinced Quinton de Kock for T20Is in lieu of next year’s T20 World Cup 2024, set to be hosted by the West Indies and the United States.

In his final assignment as South Africa’s elite ODI international wicketkeeper-batsman, Quinton de Kock finished the 2023 World Cup in India as one of the leading run-getters of the tournament.

The elegant opening batter listed 594 runs in just 10 innings, at a prolific average of 59.40. The cricketer also maintained an astonishing strike-rate of over 107 and blasted four match-winning centuries in the process.

While currently in line for next year’s T20 World Cup in West Indies, Quinton de Kock played the last of his 80 T20Is for South Africa back in March earlier this year. As of now, the elegant left-hander has been sidelined from South Africa’s T20I squad for their upcoming three-match home series against India.
