In the ongoing 3rd ODI between India and England in Ahmedabad, Virat Kohli’s fluent knock of 52 off 55 balls was cut short by Adil Rashid, reigniting discussions about the bowlers who have troubled the modern-day maestro the most.

Kohli, looking poised for a big score, edged a classic leg-spinner outside off stump to Phil Salt, marking the 11th time Rashid has dismissed him in international cricket. The dismissal not only halted India’s momentum momentarily but also spotlighted Rashid’s mastery over one of the game’s greatest batters.

The Kohli Conundrum: Bowlers With the Wood Over the Star

Rashid now joins an exclusive club of bowlers who have dismissed Virat Kohli the most number of times in international cricket. New Zealand’s Tim Southee and Australia’s Josh Hazlewood share this distinction, having exploited Kohli’s technical nuances across formats.

Southee, with his swing and seam movement, and Hazlewood, with relentless accuracy in the channel outside off, have repeatedly tested Kohli’s patience. Rashid, however, stands out as the only spinner in this trio, using subtle variations and drift to outfox the Indian stalwart.

Interestingly this is also the fifth time Adil Rashid has managed to dismiss Virat Kohli in one-day internationals. Only Tim Southee dismissed him the most number of times in this format.

India In Command After Early Scare

At the time of writing, India are firmly in control at 161/2 after 25 overs, with Shubman Gill anchoring the innings alongside Shreyas Iyer. After England opted to bowl, Mark Wood struck early to remove Rohit Sharma, but Gill and Kohli rebuilt swiftly with a 116-run partnership. Rashid’s breakthrough brought momentary relief for England, but Gill’s aggressive intent has kept India’s run rate soaring.

With Gill eyeing a century and Iyer settling in, India are primed for a mammoth total. England’s bowlers, meanwhile, will look to replicate Rashid’s success to claw back into the game.
