A final-year law student from UILS, Panjab University, named Nikhil Thamman, has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The petition aims to stop IPL matches at the recently constructed Mullanpur stadium in Mohali, which serves as the home ground for Punjab Kings, known as the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium.

Nikhil's plea asserts that the construction of the cricket stadium occurred without obtaining the required environmental clearances, blatantly disregarding the Environment Impact Assessment Notification of 2006.

It emphasizes that the stadium is situated within a 10-kilometer radius of a bird sanctuary in Sector-21, Chandigarh, necessitating prior environmental clearance from the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) as per a directive from the Supreme Court. However, this has not been undertaken, as per Nikhil's submission.

Additionally, it has been argued that the construction of the stadium proceeded without obtaining essential forest and wildlife clearance from the Department of Forest and Wildlife, Chandigarh.

Before the construction of the Mullanpur stadium, Punjab Kings used to play at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali. However, the Mullanpur stadium now serves as the home ground for Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings hosted their first game against DC at the Mullanpur stadium, which marked the return match of Rishabh Pant to cricket. Punjab Kings emerged victorious in that game.

Tonight's match between Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Mullanpur stadium has heightened interest in the outcome of Nikhil's plea in court.
