The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is looking for a new full-time head coach after interim coach Aaqib Javed decided not to continue. His contract ended after Pakistan’s poor performance in the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Reports suggest that Mike Hesson, former Director of Cricket for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), is the top candidate to take over the role.

PCB Looking At Foreign Coaches Again

Hesson, who is currently the head coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), led the team to a title win last season. His experience in international and franchise cricket makes him a strong contender for the job. PCB has already contacted him, along with a few other foreign coaches, including Australian Simon Katich and New Zealand’s current batting coach Luke Ronchi.

However, talks are still at an early stage. A PCB official, who didn’t want to be named, said that Hesson might agree to take the job if the negotiations go well. Interestingly, all three coaches had been approached earlier as well, but they turned down the offer due to other commitments at that time.

"The talk are at a very initial stage and it seems Hesson could be lured in if the negotiations are successful, " the official said.

One big reason foreign coaches are hesitant to join Pakistan is the way the PCB treated previous coaches. Mickey Arthur and Grant Bradburn were removed just six months into their contracts after the team’s early exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Similarly, Jason Gillespie left shortly after the team’s tour of Australia, and Gary Kirsten refused to return after his feedback was ignored following the T20 World Cup disaster.

Pakistan’s Recent Performance Has Been Poor So Far

Pakistan’s cricket performance has taken a hit in recent months. They finished last in the latest World Test Championship cycle after losing a Test to West Indies. They couldn’t win a single match in the recent Champions Trophy and managed only one win in nine white-ball games during their tour of New Zealand in March-April 2025.
