#OTD in 2015: Kumar Sangakkara bid farewell to international cricket

On this day, seven years ago, Sri Lanka's batting maestro Kumar Sangakkara featured in the last Test fixture of his illustrious career. The occasion was the second red-ball game of the series against India at Colombo. 

India get a significant lead in first innings

Batting first, India lost the wicket of Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane early to Dhammika Prasad. However, KL Rahul (108) and Virat Kohli (78) resurrected the team's innings in a proficient fashion with their 164-run stand for the third wicket.

In the middle-order, Rohit Sharma (79) and Wriddhiman Saha (56) paved the way for the visitors to post a total of 393 runs. 

In response, Dimuth Karaunaratne was a victim to Umesh Yadav in the second over. It was the fighting partnership between Kaushal Silva (51) and Sangakkara (32), which brought the hosts back to the contest. 

The likes of Lahiru Thirimanne (62) and skipper Angelo Mathews (102) were strong support to the Lankan team. However, Amit Mishra picked four wickets to dismiss them for a score of 306, and take a lead of 87 runs. 

India secures a dominating victory to level the series

In the second innings, India got a contribution from Vijay (82) and Rahane (126) added 140 runs for the second wicket, which already put them on the front-foot. 

Afterwards, Sharma was the top contributor with 34 runs to propel India in declaring on a score of 325/8 and post a strong target of 413 runs.

In a tough chase, Sangakkara could contribute a run-a-ball 18, laced with three fours in his last red-ball innings.  Only Karunaratne (46) was the key contributor for Sri Lanka to get all-out on 134.
