Openers must make regular runs, Nasser Hussain criticizes Zak Crawley

Nasser Hussain has once again slammed England's opener, Zak Crawley, for his dismal show in the Test format.

Crawley has come under the scanner for his inability to negate the new ball proficiently and often lay a stable platform for the team. His recent outing against South Africa fetched a score of 9 & 13, resulting in the first defeat of 2022 Summer for England.

In his latest blog for Daily Mail, Hussain reckoned that the 24-year-old was still struggling at the top-order when the Three Lions registered four successive red-ball victories in the recent series against New Zealand and India.

However, head coach Brendon McCullum has recently hailed Crawley's match-winning abilities and intends to give him a longer rope in the red-ball team.

In response to McCullum's comments, the former England skipper believes Crawley is still being unable to adopt Bazball approach, and is left confused at the crease.

"I can see why England are sticking with Crawley. He is a ‘wow’ player when he’s batting well. But the trouble is those wow occasions are fewer and further between now and he’s averaging 18.6 in his last 18 Tests, said Hussain in his blog."

Competitors of Crawley for the opening slot

With a meagre average of 22.25 in 35 innings as an opener, Crawley is certainly at risk of losing his place in the Test team. There have been few players, who have performed consistently at the top-order in the County Championship 2022, and stand a chance of a national call-up.

County Championship 2022 Stats:

Keaton Jennings: 827 runs in 12 innings at an average 68.91 for Lancashire
Ben Compton: 1119 runs in 21 innings  at an average 62.16 for Kent
Sam Robson: 665 runs in 17 innings  at an average 44.33 for Middlesex
Dom Sibley: 625 runs in 19 innings  at an average 36.76 for Warwickshire
