Australia fast bowler Scott Boland made headlines by becoming the first cricketer ever to take a hat-trick in a Day/Night Test match played with the pink ball. This special moment took place during the third Test between Australia and the West Indies at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, from July 12 to 14, 2025. The match lasted less than three days, but it gave cricket fans a memory that will last a lifetime.
Boland, who replaced Nathan Lyon in the playing XI, turned the game on its head in the second innings of the West Indies.
On the first ball of the 14th over, Boland dismissed Justin Greaves for 11 runs. Without wasting any time, he struck again on the very next ball by removing Shamar Joseph for a golden duck.
Then came the final blow, on the third ball, Boland completely destroyed Jomel Warrican’s stumps. With this, he achieved something extremely rare in cricket, a hat-trick, taking three wickets in three consecutive balls.
Scott Boland Becomes First Bowler To Shine In Pink Ball Test
What made this moment even more special is that it was the first time in Test history that a bowler had taken a hat-trick in a Day/Night Test using the pink ball.
Boland’s brilliance didn’t stop there. He had already taken three wickets in the West Indies’ first innings, and with this hat-trick in the second, he wrapped up the match with a stunning performance.
Adding to Australia’s dominance, Mitchell Starc delivered a fiery spell of bowling, taking 6 wickets for just 9 runs in 7.3 overs. Together, the Australian bowlers bowled out the West Indies for just 27 runs in 14.3 overs, the lowest team total in Test cricket since 1955.
The West Indies were chasing a target of 204 but lost the match by 176 runs. With this win, Australia swept the Test series 3-0.
By taking this hat-trick, Scott Boland joined an elite group of Australian bowlers who have achieved this feat in Test cricket. He became the 10th Australian to do so, following legends like Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, and Peter Siddle.
