Sri Lankan veteran Angelo Mathews recently became the first cricketer in history to be ‘timed out’ in international cricket. Having arrived to the crease on time during Sri Lanka’s World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh, the middle-order batsman ended up wasting precious few seconds upon realizing that he brought a broken helmet with himself.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan pounced on the opportunity to appeal for Mathews wicket, and after much considerations, on-field umpires declared him ‘out’ even before letting him face a delivery.

While Shakib’s move ended up dividing the entire cricketing spectrum, the analogy behind the bizarre mode of dismissal has become a fodder for several safety guidelines across the internet. Quite recently, the Odisha State Transport Authority (STA) used Angelo Mathews dismissal to stress the importance of using safe and certified helmets while driving on roads.

Odisha STA use Mathews dismissal to create awareness

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Odisha STA used Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews timed-out dismissal as a mean to spread awareness about using standard and certified helmets on roads while driving. They wrote:

“Road Safety lesson from World Cup 2023, Don't throw away your wicket, play a consistent long innings. Always wear ISI certified helmet 🪖 & tie the strap. Also encourage pillion rider to do so. On Field or Off Field #SafetyFirst always!”

The government authority also shared pictures of Mathews walking off the field upon his dismissal against Bangladesh.

Angelo Mathews’ dismissal, meanwhile, turned out to be a decisive moment in the contest as Sri Lanka slumped to 135-5 upon his time-out departure. Charith Asalanka scored a counterattacking century in the backend of the innings to eventually stretch the Sri Lankan total till 279.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan, already being the center of attraction for his aggressive appeal against Mathews, later unfurled a run-chase masterclass alongside Najmul Hossain Shanto. His team eventually won the contest by three wickets and crashed Sri Lanka out of the World Cup 2023 semi-finals race.
