Phillips makes Test return for 2nd Test vs WI; Blundell ruled out

On Tuesday, December 9, NZC unveiled the New Zealand squad for the upcoming second Test against the West Indies. Canterbury cricketer Mitchell Hay will be the first keeper-batter to make Test debut since 2017, the board confirmed. He will replace Tom Blundell, who has been ruled out of the fixture due to an injury.

In 29 First-Class matches, Mitchell Hay has showcased remarkable consistency, scoring 1895 runs, including eighteen fifty-plus scores, at a superb average of 48.58.

Matt Henry and Nathan Smith, two key speedsters who sustained injury blows during the first Test, have been replaced by the uncapped duo of Kristian Clarke and Michael Rae. As per NZC, Clarke and Rae are two potential debutants for the second Test against West Indies.

Meanwhile, the return of Glenn Phillips has massively strengthened New Zealand, as they aim to secure a lead by winning the Wellington Test after the drawn contest in Christchurch.

Phillips, who recently rehabilitated from a groin injury, represented Otago in the Plunkett Shield with distinction, amassing 130 runs and scalping nine wickets in two appearances. Overall, he has played 15 Tests for New Zealand, scoring 728 runs and bagging 31 wickets.
