Not Jayawardene, Sangakkara! 'This' SL Legend To Become Next Sri Lanka Head Coach

Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s former captain and one-time chief selector, is set to replace Chris Silverwood as their new head coach.

Jayasuriya himself confirmed the development to AFP on Monday, saying he was approached for the prestigious role, and is happy to accept the role.

"I have been asked to take over coaching and I am happy to do it," Jayasuriya told AFP.


Jayasuriya To Replace Chris Silverwood

Jayasuriya’s reign will begin on July 21 once the ongoing edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) ends.

Earlier, Silverwood quit Sri Lanka’s head coach after a poor T20 World Cup 2024, where his side could only manage one victory. He gave up the role due to ‘personal reasons’, while SLC thanked him for his ‘valuable contributions during his tenure’.

Silverwood took on the responsibility of Sri Lanka’s head coach in April 2022, and under his tenure, they won the T20 Asia Cup later that year. They even reached the final in Asia Cup 2023, only to be hammered by India in the summit clash.

Notably, Mahela Jayawardene, another Sri Lanka great, was there with Sri Lanka’s team as an assistant coach. However, he stepped down last month.
