In a touching moment that went way beyond the field, Chennai Super Kings sent a message about standing together when it matters most. After a massive 6.0-magnitude earthquake shook eastern Afghanistan on August 31, claiming over 800 lives and injuring nearly 3,000, CSK stepped up with a powerful tribute.
Chennai Super Kings Stand With Afghanistan
Sharing their grief and solidarity with the people of Afghanistan, CSK posted a message and prayed for the people in the country:
“To our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan, we're heartbroken by the earthquake that struck your land. In this darkest hour, may strength and hope lift you again.”
Cricket Pauses For A Moment Of Silence
Before the UAE T20 Tri-Nation clash on Sunday between Afghanistan and the UAE, players observed a minute’s silence to honour the lives lost in the quake.
Afghanistan’s players, still reeling from the tragedy back home, made a humble yet powerful gesture as they pledged their entire match fee from the game against UAE to support affected families in Kunar, one of the worst-hit provinces.
But the Afghan cricket family didn’t stop there. Cricketers from the Regional List A Tournament in Khost have also decided to chip in. On Tuesday, all collections from the players and staff will be pooled together and rushed to the quake-struck areas.
Afghanistan’s Earthquake History
This isn't the first time the country has been rattled by nature’s fury. Sitting smack on a fault line between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, Afghanistan has always been on shaky ground. The Hindu Kush region has seen more than its fair share of tremors.
Not long ago, on October 7, 2023, a 6.3 magnitude quake rocked the nation, the deadliest in recent times. Reports back then varied with the UN pegging the toll at around 1,500, while the Associated Press estimated over 4,000 lives lost.
