JioStar Introduces Paid Model [Source: @theshivaypatel/x.com]
Cricket fans in India are in for a big change! The Indian Premier League (IPL) will no longer be streamed for free on JioHotstar, the newly launched platform by JioStar. This new streaming service was formed after Viacom18 and Star India merged, combining JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar into a single platform called JioHotstar.
While the new service promises a better viewing experience with over 3 lakh hours of entertainment and live sports coverage, it also introduces a new hybrid subscription model, ending the free live streaming that fans have enjoyed since 2023.
For the last two years, IPL fans have been able to watch matches for free on JioCinema, which secured the digital rights for IPL in 2023 with a massive $3 billion deal. However, with the formation of JioStar, this free privilege is coming to an end. Reports suggest that only a few minutes of an IPL match will be available for free, after which viewers will be asked to subscribe.
This move has left many cricket fans disappointed, as free IPL streaming had become a major attraction. A source told Reuters,
"Once a user develops affinity to the platform, starts watching for free, and becomes loyal… the subscription will kick in then." This means JioStar plans to hook users with free content before prompting them to pay for full access.
Subscription Plans for IPL 2025
To continue watching IPL matches live, fans will now have to purchase a subscription. JioStar has announced three different subscription plans to suit different types of viewers:
1. Mobile-Only Plan
- Price: ₹149 for 3 months, ₹499 for 1 year
- Features: Single-device access, mobile streaming only, 720p resolution, stereo sound
2. Super Plan
- Price: ₹299 for 3 months, ₹899 for 1 year
- Features: Watch on up to 2 devices (mobile, TV, or laptop), Full HD (1080p) resolution, Dolby Atmos sound
3. Premium Plan
- Price: ₹499 for 3 months, ₹1,499 for 1 year
- Features: Stream on up to 4 devices, Ultra HD 4K (2160p) resolution, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos audio
These plans offer flexibility for users, but they also mean that IPL fans will have to pay for what was previously free.
