Kane Williamson Opts out (Source:@Sadhna1Im,x.com)
In a significant development, New Zealand have announced a 15-member squad for the two-match Test series against Zimbabwe, notably without former captain Kane Williamson. The experienced batter has chosen to sit out the series to manage his playing commitments, while 25-year-old Northern Districts pacer Matt Fisher has been rewarded with a maiden Test call-up.
Kane Williamson Opts Out Of Zimbabwe Tour
Williamson, who has not featured in a Test since facing England at home in 2024, is currently playing for Middlesex in the Vitality Blast T20 competition. His decision to turn down a central contract from New Zealand Cricket (NZC) earlier this year has afforded him the flexibility to determine his international workload.
A statement from NZC confirmed that Williamson made himself unavailable for the Zimbabwe Tests, a decision aligned with his new approach to career management.
It is also important to mention that all-rounder Michael Bracewell will also miss the series due to pre-agreed franchise commitments with The Hundred in England. Meanwhile, pacer Kyle Jamieson is unavailable as he prepares to welcome his first child.
Despite these notable absences, the New Zealand squad remains largely settled and will be led by experienced batter Tom Latham. The squad sees the return of left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel and batter Henry Nicholls.
Matt Fisher Earns Maiden Test Call-Up For New Zealand
One of the most notable developments in the squad is the inclusion of Matt Fisher. The young quick has made a strong impression on the domestic circuit, having claimed 51 wickets in 14 first-class matches at an average of 24.11. Widely regarded as one of the fastest bowlers in the country, Fisher’s raw pace and consistency have earned him high praise.
The two-Test series will be played at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, with the first match starting on July 30. The tour offers New Zealand a valuable opportunity to assess their bench strength and test young talents as they build towards the future.
