New Zealand’s cricket team has been hit by a major setback just before the second Test against Zimbabwe, as Test captain Tom Latham has officially been ruled out due to a shoulder injury. In his absence, spinner Mitchell Santner will lead the Black Caps in Bulawayo.

The Kiwis won the first Test against Zimbabwe comfortably, but things have been haywire in the squad ever since. Injuries have plagued the visiting camp in Bulawayo, with the skipper being the latest victim.

Tom Latham Fails To Recover From Injury, To Miss 2nd Test

According to an official statement released by Cricket New Zealand, Tom Latham, who had already missed the first Test with shoulder injury, was hoping to make a comeback for the second match.

However, despite working hard during his rehab, he failed a late fitness test and was declared unfit to play. With Latham ruled out at the last moment, the Black Caps had to move quickly to find a replacement for batting and fielding cover.

Auckland Aces batter Bevon Jacobs has been called in as backup. Jacobs was already in Johannesburg playing cricket, which made it easier for him to travel to Bulawayo at short notice.

Also, in Latham’s absence, Mitchell Santner will continue to lead the side. He took over the captaincy in the first Test, becoming New Zealand’s 32nd Test captain. Now, he will guide the team once again in the second match.

Injuries Grapple New Zealand

Interestingly, Tom Latham is not the only one struggling with an injury crisis. Before him, fast bowlers William O’Rourke and Nathan Smith were ruled out with back and abdominal injuries, respectively.

The second Test between Zimbabwe and New Zealand will begin on August 7 at the Queen's Sports Club in Bulawayo. The Kiwis are leading the series 1-0 after a 9-wicket win in the first Test.
