When it comes to ICC events, New Zealand has been India’s ultimate roadblock. From heartbreaking ICC Knockout defeat in 2000 to World Test Championship final loss in 2021, the Kiwis have always managed to get under India's skin when it matters most.

Blackcaps Play Mind Games With India Before Champions Trophy Final

And just before their highly anticipated Champions Trophy 2025 final, New Zealand’s official X handle decided to pour salt on old wounds. In a video posted on their account, former Kiwi legends Scott Styris, Roger Twose, and Geoff Allott walked down memory lane, reliving their iconic 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy win over India.

The erstwhile cricketers narrated what went through their minds as New Zealand snatched victory from the jaws of defeat 25 years ago in Nairobi. With this video, the Kiwis have given a subtle reminder to India that history has a habit of repeating itself when they are involved.

What Happened When India Last Faced New Zealand In Champions Trophy Final?

Rewind to the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy final in Nairobi, a match that still stings for Indian fans. Sourav Ganguly led from the front, hammering a magnificent 117, and with Sachin Tendulkar contributing 69, India seemed to be in cruise control at 264/6.

But if there’s one thing about New Zealand cricket, they never back down from a fight. Enter Chris Cairns who battled injury and India’s bowling attack to smash an unbeaten 102 off 113 balls. His heroics took New Zealand to their first-ever ICC trophy and broke Indian hearts in the process.

Fast forward 25 years, and the Kiwis have reminded India of their past pain just before the two sides meet again in the final.

India’s Chance To Finally Settle Scores

For Indian fans, New Zealand has been a thorn in their side in global tournaments. Whether it was the 2019 World Cup semi-final heartbreak or the 2021 WTC Final disaster, the Kiwis have had India’s number. However, the upcoming Champions Trophy final in Dubai is India’s golden chance for payback.

Rohit Sharma’s men have been in red-hot form as they cruised into the final with a big win against Australia. On the other hand, the Kiwis are coming in with a chip on their shoulder after demolishing South Africa in the semi-final and setting their sights on another ICC trophy.

Will India break the Kiwi curse and finally bury the ghosts of 2000 or will New Zealand once again play the ultimate party spoiler? Either way, the Champions Trophy final is set to be a blockbuster.
