In a significant development, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has unveiled a robust men's squad for the upcoming Test series against India. After suffering a two-nil whitewash against Sri Lanka, the BlackCaps are getting ready to face the mighty Indian team in a three-match Test series in their backyard.
Latham To Lead, Williamson Doubtful For 1st Test
While the experienced Tom Latham will lead New Zealand, legendary batter Kane Williamson is doubtful for the first Test in Bengaluru due to an injury. Notably, Williamson is currently recovering from a groin strain, delaying his departure to the Asian nation. The talismanic batter sustained the injury during the second Sri Lanka Test in Galle. He still needs some time to regain fitness before joining his teammates in India.
New Zealand Pick Spin-Heavy Squad For India Tests
Considering the spin-friendly tracks in India, New Zealand have included plenty of spinners in their squad. While Ajaz Patel and Ish Sodhi are pure bowling options, the BlackCaps are empowered by multiple spin-bowling all-rounders - Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra and Mitchell Santner. The promising Mark Chapman has also received a call-up as an uncapped player.
Meanwhile, Tim Southee and Matt Henry will spearhead New Zealand's pace battery alongside Will O'Rourke, who was impressive on the Lankan tour. Ben Sears is the BlackCaps' only other fast bowling option, apart from Daryl Mitchell, who can roll his arms for a few overs of medium pace.
In Williamson's absence, New Zealand's batting will primarily revolve around Tom Latham and Devon Conway, while the all-rounders will be expected to chip in with crucial runs down the order. The eyes will also be on Rachin Ravindra, who recently played a valiant knock, albeit in a losing cause, on Galle's challenging track.
