New No. 1 Batter In ICC Test Rankings | Steve Smith, Joe Root, Travis Head Dethroned

Kane Williamson has been out of action ever since he sustained a knee injury in the opening game of IPL 2023 on March 31. A couple of weeks prior to the IPL opener, the cricketer turned up for New Zealand in their home Test against Sri Lanka, where he plundered a majestic match-winning double hundred.

Unfortunately for Williamson, that was the last time he donned his national jersey for a while, as his injury-prone absence will likely last beyond the much-awaited 2023 ODI World Cup later this year.

Despite being out of action, the seasoned veteran seems to be doing fine at ICC rankings, as he was recently crowned as the number one batter on the latest Test batting charts.

Williamson dethrones Ashes-committed Australian trio

Kane Williamson unfurled three successive tons in his last three Test appearances to bring his century tally to 28. Just days after he charted his match-winning double ton against Sri Lanka, he succumbed to a freakish knee injury which might keep him out of action for a few more months.

Despite no play on sight, the cricketer regained his lost number-one ranking on the latest Test batting chart by ICC. He displaced English batting veteran Joe Root, who in turn, lost four ranks to drop to fifth.

Interestingly, the Australian batting trio of Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith and Travis Head held the top three slots earlier this month. However, under-par Ashes outcomes for the three batters resulted in their slight decline in the rankings.

Despite the hiccup, they are still within arm’s reach of Williamson’s throne, with Smith occupying the second spot and Labuschagne and Head holding on to the subsequent two positions.

The three Australians, along with former English captain Joe Root, will all get an opportunity to dethrone Williamson in the much-awaited third Ashes 2023 Test. The match will commence on July 6 at Leeds’ Headingley Cricket Ground.
