Ajit Agarkar emerged as the new chairman of selectors for the Indian men’s team. The former cricketer replaced Chetan Sharma, who left the role earlier this year.

Agarkar, among other candidates, were interviewed earlier by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), and the committee itself comprised of Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra, and Jatin Paranjape. The members unanimously voted for Agarkar, who in turn, had reservations about accepting the job.

The legendary speedster is a regular commentator and a cricket analyst, and he was also a part of the Delhi Capitals camp as team’s assistant coach.

Ajit Agarkar likely to receive pay hike as chairman

Agarkar was hesitant to take up the job as India’s new chairman of selectors, citing his annual salary as the reason. While the annual salary for a chairman of selectors for Indian men’s team ranges around ₹ 1 crore per annum, he earned significantly higher than the figure as a commentator and as an IPL coach.

However, Agarkar was persuaded to take up the chairman role, as he was deemed suitable for the position.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was looking for a young candidate, and someone who has also played T20 cricket. The 45-year-old fulfilled the criteria, and is now set to receive a hefty pay hike as a chairman.

As per a report from Cricbuzz, the BCCI will increase the annual fees for the chairman of selectors from ₹ 1 crore to ₹ 3 crores for Agarkar. Meanwhile, there are some reports floating stating that Agarkar would be getting ₹ 2.5 crores for the job.

The former Indian all-rounder is all set to launch his duties for the BCCI, with one of his immediate assignments being putting up a squad for the upcoming T20I series in West Indies.

With an ODI World Cup around the corner, it will be interesting to see Agarkar’s stance on senior members like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in India’s T20I side in the coming weeks. One can expect the selection committee to nurture young IPL talents under Hardik Pandya in T20Is, as seniors gear up for the World Cup with ODI fixtures.
