Najam Sethi Soon To Be Dethroned As Chairperson? PCB To Contest Election Soon

The race for the Chairman position of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is underway, with Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf vying for the role. Sethi, the current PCB chairman, has been leading the Management Committee since Ramiz Raja's removal in December last year.

As the tenure of the Management Committee approaches its end on June 21, both candidates have begun presenting their cases to top officials.

Sethi and Ashraf, two contenders for the PCB Chairman position, have been actively seeking support for their respective candidacies. Sethi met with PCB patron-in-chief Shahbaz Sharif to discuss his candidacy and gain his backing.

Meanwhile, Ashraf, who is affiliated with the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), held a meeting with Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ehsan Mazari, aiming to secure his endorsement for the chairman position.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, Mazari has confirmed that Ashraf is being nominated for the PCB Chairman position.

The two candidates enjoy the support of different political parties. Sethi is backed by the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, while Ashraf is being supported by the PPP.

Mazari highlighted the influence of party affiliations in the nomination process, stating that when the current government was formed, it was agreed that parties with respective ministries would have a say in selecting the appropriate candidate for each position.

As the IPC is with the PPP, they aim to have their representative in the PCB.

"When this government was formed, it was decided that parties (in the alliance) who have respective ministries will have a say in naming the man for the respective job. Hence, IPC is with PPP, so we will have our man (in the PCB). Also, Sethi's nomination [for the full term] is a conflict of interest as he is heading the management committee tasked to carry out elections but they are becoming a part of the process and getting them elected,"  Ehsan Mazari said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

The competition for the PCB Chairman position intensifies as Sethi and Ashraf maneuver through political support and navigate potential conflicts of interest.
