My name is only because of One-Day Cricket: Rohit Sharma

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma during a promotional event, quashed talks of one-day cricket losing its limelight in recent times. He said that the format is still very much relevant and one of the best to watch.

He  remarked that his name in the international arena is all because of the ODI format, where he holds various records, with one of them being the highest score in an innings (264 vs Sri Lanka). Also, adding that every format is crucial to cricket and playing the game for his country is of utmost importance, regardless of which form of sport it is.

Sighting the example of Test cricket, he mentioned that the same talks were going about the longest format earlier, but now all of those doubts are very much cleared, and Test is still considered the purest among them all.

What Rohit said to The Indian Express

"Mera naam hi one-day cricket se bana hai. Sab bekar ki baatein hai (I first made my name in one-day cricket. All this is idle talk). People were earlier talking about Test cricket (being in danger).

"For me, cricket is important – whatever be the format. I would never say that ODI is getting finished or T20 is getting finished or Tests are nearing an end. I wish there was another format as well, because for me, playing the game is most important.

"Since childhood, we dreamt of playing the game for India. Whenever we play ODIs, stadiums are full, the excitement remains high. It's an individual choice as to which format to play or not, but for me, all three formats are important."

Cricket will thrive in long run

To put it in words, what Rohit said is true, considering that every format has its relevance, and down the line, they would bring in more audience if not now. He believes that cricket can afford to add another format, but the only thing that matters is playing for his nation.
