Sri Lanka's batting sensation Kamindu Mendis had a dream outing with the bat, as he slammed a flamboyant century in the second Test against New Zealand at Galle International Stadium. Coming at number five, the stylish left-handed batter struck a glorious 182*, helping Sri Lanka post a whopping 602-run total in their first innings.

After Dinesh Chandimal departed, scoring a valiant 208-ball 116, Kamindu Mendis joined hands with Angelo Mathews in the middle. The duo stitched a valuable 107-run stand for the fourth wicket, ensuring Sri Lanka didn't lose the momentum following Chandimal's departure.

Although Mathews missed out on a well-deserved ton, Kamindu Mendis frustrated the BlackCaps with his scintillating stroke play. The southpaw hammered the visiting bowlers all around the park, eventually scoring his fifth century in Test cricket.

The 25-year-old, who equalled Sir Donald Bradman as the joint second-quickest batter to enter the 1000-run club, also overtook talismanic English batter Joe Root to register the most Test hundreds this year.

Sri Lanka Claim Driving Seat In 2nd Test

Riding on Kamindu Mendis' marathon knock, Sri Lanka posted 602 runs for the loss of five wickets in their first innings. After the hosts declared their innings, New Zealand had a shaky start, losing two crucial wickets before stumps on day 2.

While Asitha Fernando got rid of Tom Latham, in-form Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya deceived Devon Conway with a beauty. Before the umpire called it a day, the Kiwis tottered at 22 for two, with Kane Williamson batting alongside night watchman Ajaz Patel.
